When My Baby Is Buggy was born...

Years ago, when I was perhaps eleven or twelve, my daddy drew me a little cartoon of a ladybug pushing a baby carriage, and the caption read: "My Baby is Buggy." I loved that sweet little scrap of paper and saved it for years, but alas, somewhere along the way that tiny piece of history disappeared. I imagine that my dad's 'Mrs. Ladybug' may have been the catalyst for one of my most fulfilling occupations: Illustrator and maker of tiny things.

The Bandit Surfer

This photo (courtesy of my cousin who is an avid sailor) makes me smile every time I look at it! There is a story in there, and I'm sure it will finally spring forth into one of our children's books! The actual story was that this little guy was on board when my cousin's sailboat entered a race (from somewhere near Huntington beach to somewhere in the waters off Mexico and back again) and I imagine he knew he was in it for the duration, being 'out to sea' and all... so the tiny guy stuck it out, his fuzzy little feathers fluttering in the ocean breeze. Finally he made it back to land. And no, he did not win the race, but the ride, apparently, was exhilarating!

  1. The exact location of this shot was about 15 miles off of Dana Point heading North on the return from Ensenada. Great Title! Your Cousin Bill

  2. Being a graduate from a Big 10 school I must say that the bird didnt win because it is obviouly an Iowa fan telling by its colors. And we don' like when Iowa wins :)

I love it though...lets see some more of your illustrations and "little things".

  3. I agree - great title for the picture! Poor little, brave little birdie. And now ... what's the proper term for that surfboard-lookin' thing he landed on?
